There are detailed rules and regulations concerning students from outside the European Union who wish to study in the UK. BMTC is able to offer advice to prospective non-EU students. Prospective BMTC students should contact the College admission office for personal advice, but the following general points should be noted in the first instance:
UK Entry Requirements
For students wishing to obtain Entry Clearance before coming to Britain, the following documentation should be regarded as essential.
- A letter from a UK college confirming your admission on a course. The college must be approved by the UK Department for Education and Science.
- A valid passport.
- Evidence to show that you have adequate funds to support your entire planned stay in the U.K. (e.g. Bank statements, pay slips)
- Original academic and/or professional certificates relevant to your planned course of study.
- Evidence to show that you intend to leave the U.K on completion of your course (e.g. a letter from an employer in your home country confirming your future employment).
- A completed application form.
General notes for overseas students
here are four intakes per year for many of our courses (such as ACCA, CIMA, CAT) – usually January, March, July and September each year. You can choose the term which suits you best.
Once you have chosen the course you would like to take with BMTC, you will need to complete an enrolment form and send it with a minimum course deposit to BMTC. We advise that you pay the course fees for a minimum of half of your first year’s study, as this generally helps students to more easily obtain a visa for a longer period and you will not then need to worry about obtaining a quick visa extension to stay in the UK at a later date. Please note that there is currently a visa extension fee of £500 if you visit the UK Home Office in person to have your student visa extended at a later stage after initial enrolment. Obtaining a visa for a longer period will ensure that you avoid the extension fee expense in the future.
Payments can be made by bank transfer or by banker’s draft and should be made payable to ‘’Birmingham Management Training Co.’’ and sent to our address. We can then arrange for your unconditional course confirmation letters that you will need to apply for your visa through the British Embassy or High Commission in your area.
If a student is unable to obtain a visa to study in the UK, BMTC will refund the fee sent by the student less an admission charge of £150 provided written evidence of the refusal is provided to the College.
If you are late obtaining a visa and therefore unable to join the term for which you have Enroled, you can send us a request in writing, by email or by fax from your country and we can transfer you to the following term. There is no charge for such transfers provided they are deemed valid by the College.
Helping you when you arrive
Overseas students arriving in the U.K for the first time may require a pick-up and transfer from the airport to their initial accommodation. BMTC can arrange this, and help to make your first experience in the U.K a pleasant one. Any student wishing to be picked up by a BMTC representative from the airport must inform the College of the following:
1. Airline and the flight number
2. Arrival airport and the date of arrival.
This information must be given to the College at least two weeks before the arrival date.
BMTC can also help you to open a bank account by issuing letters confirming your enrolment with the College. We can also help you find a place to live, should you require us to book any accommodation for you. Many of our students have found it helpful for us to arrange temporary accommodation for their first week in Birmingham, enabling them to find their own permanent home for the duration of their course.
The BMTC staff includes a special adviser dedicated to assisting International students settle into all aspects of life as a BMTC student. And If you have any problems, concerns, doubts or complications during your course, such as finance, immigration matters, visa problems or homesickness you can get expert help from the College team. Please note that BMTC also runs a free English course for those students who require a test of English before commencing a course with the college.
Cost of living
The cost of living is estimated to be about £6,000 per annum. This includes accommodation, food, bills, entertainment etc. Students should ensure that they have adequate funds to support themselves for the whole of their stay in the UK. As a student, you are eligible for a number of discounts in shops, restaurants, clubs, and on public transport.
Full-time non-EU students are allowed to undertake part-time work up to 20 hours per week. Birmingham is a big city full of opportunities and students can find part-time jobs relatively easily.
Medical Care
Where overseas students enrol for a course duration of more than six months, the College advises them to register with a medical doctor, or General Practitioner (GP). The college keeps an up-to-date list of local doctors and offers advice on how to register with a GP.
Student Union
Our Student Union, like all other UK Students Union, acts as a service provider for all students Enroled at the college as well as performing the role of being a representative body. The Union aims to represent all voices. As a student with BMTC you are automatically represented by the Union, so it is fundamental that we meet your thoughts and needs.
Your Future in Birmingham:
The UK's International Graduates Scheme, effective from 1 May 2007, now enables international students who have acquired a BA (Bachelor of Arts degree) or higher qualification in any subject from a recognised UK higher education institution such as BMTC to be able to apply to stay on and work in the UK for up to one year.
This Scheme means that students who successfully complete any of BMTC's academic courses (undergraduate or postgraduate) can then apply to stay on and gain valuable work experience in the UK after completing their studies.
